They had been meeting in secret for six months. She knew that her father wouldn't approve of her feelings for Lord Chauster.
Lord Chauster was an unknown quantity to the community. He would shun invitations from the Lords and Ladies to social events. He was known as a recluse and because of this unknown quantity, people were always gossiping about him. At these social events, the men would retire to partake in port and cigars and would speculate about his wealth, more often than not, alluding to him being a dark rougue, but none had proof. And the women sitting in their pretty ball gowns, would lower their voices when they spoke of him, whispering their opinions with disdain in their voices behind delicately gloved hands, that he was a person of ill repute and that they would never been seen dead with him. But privately, each and every one of those women would entertain daydreams of this dark handsome stranger with long raven hair holding them in his arms and having his way with them. But....none of them had ever spoken to him, nor had they been close enough to even see the mesmerising icy blue eyes that Nichola would lose herself in each and every night as she had for the last six months.
She had met him while walking on the shores of the lake one moonlit night, her thoughts a million miles away, when, she saw from the corner of her eye, leaning against a tree, the unmistakeable sheen of the moonlight on Lord Chauster's hair. She could not move as she stood unashamedly staring at his rugged handsome features, but what had turned her feet to stone that she was unable to move, was the mesmerising icy blue of his eyes, enhanced by the glow of the moon. Then he disappeared. For a long time afterward, she still could not move but when she became aware once again of her surrounds, she lifted her skirts and dashed home. The next night she returned to that place and sure enough, he was there again but this time, he came out from the shadows of the trees and in four strides of his long booted legs, he had been standing in front of her.
The rest is history.........but here and now, on the day that she was to be betrothed to a man who was twenty years older than her, the lecherous, unkempt yet very rich Lord Aster, to whom her father had promised her hand in marriage, she was beside herself with fear that this marriage would be taking place in less than three hours.
Last night when she had met with Lord Chauster for what she thought would be the last time, he had promised there would be a marriage today but, it would be to him, with or without her fatherís permission.
Now as she stood in the silent gloominess of her room overlooking his castle on this misty morning, her heart was in turmoil. Lord Chauster was with her father now, would her father allow this union or would she be forced by the honour of her father's word, to marry Lord Aster?
Her thoughts were broken as through the mist, a dove came to rest on the balustrade of her balcony........a snow white dove, delicate in its beauty, so white that the misty morning light cast an aura around it.
Her heart skipped a beat.
Was this dove her messenger.......Were these the wings of hope.....
